Sheriff Craig DuMond
supervises the Mounted Patrol at their appearances throughout
Delaware County. The Sheriff’s Mounted Patrol participates in civic
events throughout the year.
“The use of horses in police work is just as relevant today as it
was in 1797 when the Sheriff’s Office was established. Working and
searching in Delaware County can be difficult and at times,
especially in areas not accessible by conventional methods and the
horse is the perfect alternative. Being 8-10 feet in the air gives
the officer a perfect vantage point to operate in a wide variety of
scenarios. Additionally, we plan to utilize this detail as a means
of community relations and appear at various parades, festivals and
fairs. The horse makes the officer more approachable to the public
in general and helps build the bridge toward effective community
relations.”
