How To Report A Crime

Find a safe place to make the call. When done, dial 9-1-1- as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the greater the advantage for the perpetrator.

• Tell the 9-1-1 dispatcher your location.

• Remain Calm.

• The Dispatcher knows what questions to ask you. They will guide you through the process.

• They will ask you for your name and telephone number so that they can call you back if they need to.

• Once an officer arrives, relay your information.  The Dispatcher will have told the officer the basic information needed. You will be expected to fill in the details.

• Keep in mind the description of the perpetrator. While you are waiting for the officer, you may want to make a list answering the questions below (while it is fresh in your mind.)

  • Sex

  • Race

  • Approximate Age

  • Height  -compare it to a nearby object or the officer’s height

  • Weight - was person average or very thin or burly?

  • Hair Color and Length - was a hat or cap worn to cover hair?

  • Were there any distinguishing dental details you recall?

  • If a man, did he have facial hair, mustache, beard, side burns, etc.?

  • Eye Color - were glasses worn?

  • Were there any visible scars or tattoos and if so, where?

  • Description of the person’s clothing. Did it look like an intentional disguise?

  • Did the person wear garments having logos?

  • Any tell-tale mannerisms exhibited? Or repetitious statements?

  • Did the person exhibit a discernable dialect?

  • Did the perpetrator use a vehicle? If so, did you notice make, model, color?

  • Do you recall ever seeing the perpetrator anywhere in the past?
