ROBERTA (BOBBI) BURGIN

Delaware County Employee of the Month
June 2011

Roberta (Bobbi as she prefers to be known) Burgin began working for the Delaware County Department of Social Services on July 21, 1986 as a Social Welfare Examiner for Public Assistance and Food Stamp cases.

As a Social Welfare Examiner, Bobbi was responsible for determining both initial eligibility for individual and family applicants as well as their continued eligibility at regular intervals.  In 1994, she was promoted to the supervisory position, Senior Social Welfare Examiner.  In 1999, she was elevated to a new position, Senior Social Services Program Specialist.  Over the course of eighteen months, Bobbie studied and trained in all Delaware County DSS assistance and care programs to prepare her to determine eligibility for HEAP, Public Assistance, Food Stamps, Medicaid and the Department’s emergency programs.  As Senior Social Services Program Specialist, Bobbi became a Team Leader who now directs a staff of five to seven employees in all aspects of eligibility determination for all assistance and care programs.  In addition, Bobbi is the Department’s foster care Title IV-E specialist.  She ensures that each child entering foster care has an application completed on his or her behalf as well as determining if the Department will be able to claim Title IV-E Federal Foster Care assistance payments.

Bobbi’s husband Robert is the Town of Bovina Highway Superintendent and Bovina Fire Chief.  They have one son, Joseph, a 9th grade scholar-athlete at Delaware Academy.

Joseph is known in golfing circles for his ability on the course.  Bobbi also loves to golf with her husband and son.  Her other hobbies include gardening, cooking what she grows, and watching a good NASCAR race, when time permits.

Bobbi has served as Captain of the Bovina EMS squad for many years.  Whenever there is a medical emergency at the Department, Bobbi is quick to act and help the person until emergency transportation arrives.

Bobbi is a “people person” and particularly enjoys working with people and helping them in the role the Department plays in providing economic and health related care to those who are not able to obtain it on their own.   Bobbi shares her knowledge and abilities with all staff in a friendly and supportive manner.  According to her co-workers, “No matter what she is called upon to do, she handles each task with a smile and a sense of humor that is infectious.  She is a positive force within the agency – dependable, supportive and an incredible asset to the Delaware County community that we serve.”

Congratulations, Bobbi, for this well-deserved recognition.
