BENJAMIN BALCOM
Delaware County Employee of the Month
December
2007
Benjamin Balcom started working for Delaware
County’s Department of Public Works as a seasonal laborer in March,
2002, and became a permanent Motor Equipment Operator in June, 2002. He
was promoted to Heavy Equipment Operator in November of 2003. From
March, 2004 through November 0f 2006, Ben served as Temporary Working
Supervisor. In June, 2007, Ben was appointed Highway Crew Supervisor
for the guide rail crew.
The
guide
rail crew has come a long way since its inception from the standpoint of
equipment, tools, production and applications of Department of
Transportation Standards. Ben has been a key player in that
advancement. He is a very dedicated, conscientious individual who takes
his work very seriously. He has spent a lot of time reading about and
familiarizing himself with Department of Transportation standards. He
is always on the lookout for new and better ways of getting the guide
rail work done at a lesser cost. Even when he is traveling on his own
time, he always observes contractors equipment and methods as he passes
construction sites.
Ben is a pusher for production, but he does so
in a way that the entire crew enjoys working for him.
After the June, 2006 flood, Ben and his crew put
in a great amount of overtime to ensure the guide rail was up for the
safety and protection of those using the roads.
Ben’s favorite part of the job is working
outdoors and on all the different tasks for the guide rail crew.
Ben is married to Dianne and enjoys camping,
fishing and gardening.
